Blink and you’ll miss it. Summer on Martha’s Vineyard

Summer on the Vineyard

So it’s already happened and somehow I missed the changeover. Summer has arrived and the parking spots are all gone. The stores are brimming with product where the last time I looked they were closed for the season. It’s 80 degrees, but yesterday was in the mid 60’s. There are people everywhere and the Pedicabs are riding around ringing their bells and picking up fares.

Suddenly its summer and there wasn’t even a slow warm-up. Its empty one day and full the next. Quiet and then loud. Deserted and suddenly inundated. The season’s change in the most remarkable way on this island… life springs forth from every corner and you have to be ready to catch it.

My favorite spot to view the onslaught of summer is Post Office square in Oak Bluffs. I like to get a coffee, sit on a bench or the brick wall and indulge in some serious people watching. Whiplash notwithstanding, the sudden appearance of thousands of strangers is just what I am craving after a stark winter of seeing the same people day in and day out.

I like to watch the cars drive by. They have plates from all over, many celebrating Martha’s Vineyard. TSMOO or VINYUD are common, CHLMRK and EDGTWN . I like to look at everybody and everything and drink it all in. I like the clothes and the shoes and the cameras and the energy. I love the children and their ice cream cones, the parents and their flustering, the couples and their intimacy. I love seeing the magic happen in all of them as they enjoy what I take for granted.

Its a fun and exiting time of year. Everything that is celebratory happens in the next 6-8 weeks. Last night was the season opener with The Taste of the Vineyard, an annual food and wine festival that celebrates local cuisine and launches the Vineyard’s restaurant season.

From here we go to the 4th of July parade and fireworks, the Tisbury Street fair, ice cream festivals, strawberry festivals, traditional fairs and more fireworks. It is a condensed version of what traditionally takes a year or more to unfold anywhere else. We like things fast and furious around here and it all happens in the blink of an eye.

This is what we have all been waiting for, and though it can be hectic, crazy and frustrating at times, summer on the Vineyard is to be embraced, rejoiced and devoured. Savored then put away for another year because in that same blink of an eye September is upon us and the acceleration of pace suddenly stops. Until next year.

Will you be here?

I love Post Office Sq in Oak Bluffs too… just sit and watch the world go by…it never fails to entertain me. By the way, my NJ car has one of those ‘Vineyard’ plates. 🙂
